Leadership Funda: People are motivated by inspirational problems
The country of my birth is India, where we have the largest proportions of population in the younger age groups in the world. In 2020, We are becoming a great IT workforce with Indian origin people leading multinational companies. India is establishing all over Silicon Valley like never before, Apart from the very well-known people there are lot of Indian people heading Multinational companies. All this adds to India’s image and make us proud.
To name few, we have Indian-origin CEOs, Udit Batra CEO Millipore Sigma, Shantanu Narayen CEO Adobe system, Ajay Banga,CEO of master card , Satya Nadella CEO Microsoft and Sundar Pichai CEO Alphabet, Arvind Krishna CEO IBM among the world's top Indian origin CEO’s who are shaping the world.
What makes them eligible to occupy the post? Arvind Krishna led the 34 billlion acquisition of open source enterprise software company red hat in 2018. Sundar Pichai launched the Google Chrome browser which was a major decision by Google to compete with Internet explorer when Internet explorer changed their default search engine to Bing. Sundar played a pivotal role in the phenomenal success of Google Chrome surpassing the competitors like I E and Firefox.
On the contrary If you review the India based companies Infosys, Reliance Industries, Tata, Mahindra & Mahindra, Aventis Pharma you will observe that the leaders are also Indian. So, there is a lesson of leadership from India which helped all these leaders reach the top management. They didn’t mention skill in financial markets, economics, acquisitions, or negotiation —talents that Western CEOs often claim, they all give the credit to their people. They believe in making investment in people development which in return help employee engagement despite tight labour markets and widespread job-hopping. All these top Indian leaders have one thing in common they engage with their country, culture, and employees in a characteristic way, and this is an important factor in their performance. They all believe in prosperity with principles. They all try to be role model for their employees and try to maintain the organizational culture.
When Udit Batra was asked in one of the interviews how do you deal with the recruitment and getting the right people in Millipore Sigma, he replied people are motivated by inspirational problems and that is why people want to work with us where you solve inspirational problems where you can make a difference yourself and finally, being a global organization having that heritage of 350 years, having the culture of trust from owner and a merit based environment. He further stated that leadership is how you think about people
He believes that leaders are at the tip of the sphere where they decide their own direction, they have the responsibility to choose the direction and they make the right direction as they are serving team and the society.
So if you deep dive into the philosophy of all these leaders you will see one thing in common, they want to create a compelling future with best minds , It’s an important lesson the budding leaders can learn from them.
