Depression: What You Need To Know

Have you ever woken up early on a morning? Looking outside the window watching the mist entering your room ? After you brew a cup of coffee, you sit on a window seat and gaze through the glass, admiring fog. Taking small sips from the bitterness in your cup, you realize that such mornings are so wonderful that they help change our mood, they help us overcome stress and sadness.

And there are people who do not enjoy these small changes in life, For them its just another day of their life. Some people are obsessed with their own pain, they will retreat from everything. They will stop eating, unless they start eating too much. Sex will lose its appeal; sleep will become a frustrating pursuit. They will always be tired, even though they will do less and less. They will think a lot about death. We can define this as Depression.

I was struck with the fact when people say they have depression, They feel that their lovely life turned miserable, they will feel miserable all time. And the worst part is , People don’t know that it can be treated.

The opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality, and it was vitality that seemed to seep away from us in that moment. All these people who are suffering from mental illness has a unique story , the people who are suffering from depression are all hurting for a different reason. They have tried multiple treatments, therapies, mediation yet they loose hope at some point of time. They sometimes don’t realize that they are passing through depression.

We all have different sets of likings in life and our mood keeps changing because of emotions we experience. The best thing about mood is that it is adaptive, If you can keep your mood better with an activity or in someone’s presence then you are actually coming out of depression.

If a brain cancer patient say that he feels better for some time standing on head then it may be an absurd statement as that will not cure his illness, But that is not the case with depression. If a person says standing on your head makes you feel better then it works .It means you are not depressed anymore. To come out of depression you need to understand what works for you.

Depression is an illness is how you feel and if you feel better then you are not depressed anymore.

Depression is an out come of negative emotions like anxiety and sadness, Its like more and more sadness in you.Imagine, for instance, a depression triggered by a bitter divorce. The ruminations might take the form of regret (“I should have been a better spouse”), recurring counterfactuals (“What if I hadn’t had my affair?”) and anxiety about the future (“How will the kids deal with it? Can I afford my payments?”). While such thoughts reinforce the depression — that’s why therapists try to stop the ruminative cycle. If you visit remote villages or tier 2 cities of India you will never find a counsellor, rarely you will find one or two Psychiatrist. There are two reasons behind it, one is the lifestyle they follow and the other is the reason that they are surrounded by their family and friends, They have someone to share their feelings problems leading to a cooperative act.,

So actually depression is also a consequence of imbalanced lifestyle and lack of trustworthy people and friends around you. You need to have people around you who can understand you, whom you can share your problems and allow them to be a part of your life. You need people who really care for you and love you.Allow them to show you the sunshine..

Mood is adaptive to have emotions like anger happiness , sadness, joy, pleasure, and major depression happens when that system break-ens.

Psychiatrists and Doctors say you take these happy pills and feel happy, But does that really help you come out of depression ? What is the conclusion ? What is the mechanism of resilience? How do those people who had depression managed to get through ? All these are tough questions to be answered but the magic is that there is an answer.

Gradually depression leads to anxiety. Now how will you define anxiety? Anxiety is when you care too much about everything. And , depression is when you don’t really care about anything. Having both is just like hell.

Those who can tolerate the depression are the ones who came out of it. The point is that, we are depressed for a reason; our pain is about something. Drugs may make you feel better for quite sometime but no real progress is ever made with antidepressants. The drugs aren’t really solving anything.Inmost cases, the recovery period is going to be long and difficult. And that’s what I told those who approached me. I said: ‘I know you’re hurting. I know these problems seem impossible. But they’re not. And I can help you solve them.
